TransContinental Drivers Association was to be a governing body for all efforts involving cross-country record attempts. Drivers would submit evidence, we’d review it and make a determination of the legitimacy of the run, and upon approval, record the time in our system to be the original and official source of truth. It was a relatively big effort for something that didn’t have a lot of upside for those of us doing the work. Actually, there was more downsides – everything from egos to legal liabilities.
So why now?
First, we’ve witnessed hundreds of incident-free timed cross-country drives over the past 50 years, which lends credibility to our efforts. Additionally, by shifting our role to function more as a “adjacent” vs. “governing” organization (yes…it’s nuanced), we can reduce our liability while providing a good resource for the driving community. Beyond simply archiving stories of individual cross-country runs, we also plan to have some fun with the brand and the celebration of “long drives” through merchandise and potentially some events.
Please bear with us as we get this site going. It’ll be a few months.
